Iris Kirby House receives support from VOCM Cares

Posted 01/31/2014 by Kelly Reid

VOCM Cares donate $10,000

Today the VOCM Cares Foundation supported the Iris Kirby House with a donation of $10,000. The Iris Kirby House provides shelter to women and their children who are experiencing relationship abuse. Iris Kirby House aims to be a safe haven for women and children who have needed to flee their homes due to domestic violence. The shelter provides emergency housing and support services to over 2500 women and children each year. Services are provided free of charge to all residents and ex-residents.

Iris Kirby House opened in 1981 to provide abused women with a safe home and the opportunity to explore alternatives to living in an abusive relationship. Emergency housing, advocacy and support services are available at the shelter to all residents and ex-residents. Due to the tremendous demand for these services, Iris Kirby House’s sister shelter, O’Shaughnessy House, opened in Carbonear in September 2010.

Together, both of these shelters are helping women and children to escape abusive households and to build a better tomorrow.
