On Sunday, April 7 the annual Holocaust Memorial Service took place at the Sheraton Hotel in St John's, with an address from a survivor of a Nazi death camp. Philip Riteman presented A Survivor Speaks: The Holocaust Experience of Newfoundland's Philip Riteman. When he was 15, Philip and his family were taken to Auschwitz. He alone survived the ordeal of torture, starvation, and death.  1500 people showed up to share in his story.

The service was a presentation of the Jewish Community Havura and the Atlantic Jewish Council, and sponsored by VOCM Cares and the Claims Conference.
