Promoting excellence in Canadian Broadcasting
The Purpose
The VOCM Cares "Memorial Broadcast Scholarship" was established by the VOCM CARES FOUNDATION to honor the lives of outstanding Newfoundland and Labrador Broadcasters.
By endorsing quality education of potential broadcasters, the members of the Board of Directors of the VOCM CARES FOUNDATION believe they are supporting the future of quality broadcasting in Canada. Toward that goal, the Foundation has established a scholarship fund aimed at higher education of promising students. The purpose of this scholarship fund is multi-fold.
* To encourage a higher standard of professionalism in the industry.
* To foster a stronger relationship between higher education and the profession
* To promote an understanding of journalistic ethics and societal responsibility of broadcasters
* To support potential and commitment in promising future broadcasters.
The Scholarship
The VOCM CARES FOUNDATION will make available up to $5,000 annually in scholarship awards. These scholarships will be presented in the following manner. Up to five, $1,000 dollar awards can be presented each year to 5 deserving broadcast students, or two $2,500 awards can be presented each year.
Those applicants determined to be the best candidates may receive a scholarship award. The Board will not consider the personal circumstances of the applicants. It should be noted that the Board reserves the right not to make an award in any given year.
Selection Criteria
Applicants must have:
- A Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) home address and must be a NL resident; or landed immigrant status and a NL resident, with the right to work in Canada.
- The applicant must be a high school graduate or as a mature student have achieved a GED style certificate. Mature students are those who have been out of school for at least one year.
- Up to three letters of recommendation from teacher/college professor, broadcast professional and/or a businessperson. Recommendations from relatives are not acceptable.
- The application should also be signed by a college radio/television department head or broadcaster certifying that the applicant meets the criteria and is enrolled in a broadcasting program.
- Applicants may continue to apply for the VOCM Cares "Memorial Broadcast Scholarship" as long as they are pursuing a career in broadcasting and continuing their studies at a recognized broadcasting school or university/college.
- The VOCM Cares Foundation Board of Directors will appoint members of the Selection Committee to review applications.
