Campaign Overview

The VOCM Cares Coats for Kids Campaign is an annual event carried out in partnership with the Canadian Red Cross, Memorial University's School of Social Work, Vibrant Communities and Newfoundland Power. The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #1 in St. John's has also come on as a supporter and now provides the space for the Coats for Kids distribution centre. With the addition of Vibrant Communities as a partner we are now able to identify the neighborhoods most in need of a mobile depot visit provided by Metrobus.

Coats are collected through donations, primarily in conjunction with local businesses and schools. Subway also offers the opportunity for schools to win a Subway Party which is held for the school that collects the most winter items for the program.

When collections are complete, a retail-type store is set up at the Legion Branch #1 where  families can come take winter clothing for their children at no cost to the family.

Metrobus also supports the campaign by providing the opportunity for a travelling depot which allows us to fill a bus with winter items and visit areas of this city that may have families and children who cannot visit the free depot. Families can come on board the bus and take what they need free of charge.

For a number of years Newfoundland Power has taken a special interest in this project and has allowed the VOCM Cares Foundation to place an insert in their October monthly residential billing advertising the Coats for Kids Campaign. In recent years, they extended their support a step further by coordinating the collection and distribution of winter items from their depots stretching from Carbonear to Corner Brook.

Opportunities to donate also exist through events such as movie showings hosted at Empire Theaters. In these events the general public are invited to a special screening at one of the Empire Theaters Cinemas in which admission is a donated winter clothing item for the program.
